Working Wood in the 18th Century:
Making Case Furniture--Desks and Bookcases

The seventh annual Working Wood in the 18th Century conference, co-sponsored by Fine Woodworking magazine, will be held from January 12 to January 19, 2005. As in past years, the conference will be offered twice. Please note that this year the first session will begin on Wednesday evening, January 12, and run through Saturday, January 15. The second will begin on Sunday evening, January 16, and run through Wednesday evening, January 19.

The topic will be "Making Case Furniture: Desks and Bookcases." Colonial Williamsburg Historic Trades cabinetmakers will discuss and demonstrate the design and construction of bookcases and other case types that frequently formed the upper portion of elaborate desks. They will explore carcass construction, shelves and other interior partitions, glazed and paneled door construction, and decorative details.

Guest presenters will discuss and demonstrate drawer and fallboard construction and the design and installation of desk interiors including pigeon holes, drawers, and doors. As always, these demonstrations will concentrate on period methods of workmanship, and close-up video monitoring will show the processes in detail. These conferences are informal, and there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions, chat with speakers, and network with fellow woodworkers.

Registration for the conference will begin when the brochure is mailed in September. These programs have filled to capacity every year, so you are encouraged to register early. To be added to the mailing list, submit your postal address to dchapman@cwf.org or call 1-800-603-0948.
